UPS Chief David Abney Delivers
Inside Story On Outsourcing

Published Wednesday, November 10, 2004

By Angie Green

Atlanta – At “Brown,” where issues of free trade, outsourcing and the global marketplace are delivered up daily, nowhere are they more important than for UPS International President David Abney.

As the man responsible for the strategic development and management of UPS’ international package division, Abney is in a unique position to analyze the inevitability of a global marketplace for the United States, the South and, in particular, “Brown’s” home of Georgia. He began his UPS career in 1974 as a part-time employee, loading and unloading packages; 30 years later, his company boasts 40,000 employees in overseas operations.

Abney will share his perspective and experiences at UPS as well as market-oriented solutions to concerns about outsourcing on Tuesday Nov. 16 at the Georgia Public Policy Foundation’s Policy Briefing Luncheon, noon at the Commerce Club.

Abney, a native of Greenwood, Miss., and graduate of Delta State University, also served as president of SonicAir®, UPS's same-day delivery service. At UPS, he has led logistics and freight operations in Canada, Latin America and the United States and its global operations of freight forwarding and customs brokerage operations. He is a past chairman of the Board of Directors of the Air Couriers Conference of America as well as the Airline Liaison Committee. He currently is on the board of Cargo Network Services, a subsidiary of the International Air Transport Association.

This Policy Briefing Luncheon with David Abney highlights the ongoing commitment by the Foundation to provide a forum for discussion and debate on the issues that matter to Georgians. The luncheon is scheduled for noon Tuesday at the Commerce Club. The cost is $25 for members and guests; $30 for non-members. To reserve a seat, e-mail reservations@gppf.org or call 404-256-4050 or 800-423-8867.

Media representatives who wish to attend may contact Chris Adams at 404-256-4050 or e-mail cadams@gppf.org.
